Searching for Reverie: A Traveler’s Observations

Over the last twenty years the post-Bionians have begun spelling out the beginning of the metabolizing process (reverie) in the analyst’s mind that takes place in the presence of underrepresented mental states. While this bold attempt has led to new discoveries with many possibilities for understanding patients, it seems to have obscured differences amongst leading post-Bionians with regard to how they see the forms of reverie, and how best to work with them. With Bion’s perspective as a background, this paper explores three approaches, and how they differ with regard to whether one follows the views of early or late Bion. Technical issues associated with these views are raised. A clinical example is offered as one way to use reverie.

Speakers

Fred Busch, PhD, FIPA (Presenter) — Training and Supervising Analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Dr. Busch has published over 90 articles in the psychoanalytic literature, and three books, primarily on the method and theory of treatment. His work has been translated into eight languages, and he has been invited to present over 160 paper and clinical workshops nationally and internationally. His third book, Creating a Psychoanalytic Mind:  a Method and Theory of Psychoanalysis, was a finalist for the Gradiva prize. He was the Editor of JAPA Books, and has been on numerous editorial boards.

Christopher Lovett, PhD (Discussant) — Candidate Member, and is on the Faculty of the Explorations in Mind program, BPSI. He is an Associate Member of the Editorial Board of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis, and has published and presented papers on identification mechanisms, the psychoanalytic frame, and Green’s concept of ‘The Dead Mother’. He has a private practice in Newton Centre, MA.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the ambiguities in the meaning of the term “reverie”.
  2. Critique the ways of using “reverie” as seen in the literature.
  3. Compare “reverie” with the analyst’s countertransference and associations.
  4. Assess whether “reverie” is a useful way to describe the phenomenon under discussion.

Event Cancellation Policies & Procedures
Any program participant requesting their individual program registration be canceled, must submit their request in writing via email to Drew Brydon at dbrydon@bpsi.org. For fee-based events, a request for cancellation (and refund using the original form of payment) must be received no later than 48 hours in advance of the event. Requests received later than 48 hours prior to the event will not be processed or accepted. All approved refunds are subject to a $10.00 administrative fee. If BPSI cancels and event, all registrants will receive a full refund of fees paid (no administration charge) no later than two business days following the scheduled date of the event, using the original form of payment.
