Explaining the Persistence of Gender Inequality: The Work-Family Narrative as a Social Defense against the 24/7 Work Culture


Robin Ely (Presenter) is Diane Doerge Wilson Professor of Business Administration and faculty chair of the HBS Gender Initiative.  She conducts research on race and gender relations in organizations with a focus on organizational change, group dynamics, learning, conflict, power, and identity. Professor Ely is presently conducting research on how women can be effective leaders in the face of gender stereotypes and the so-called “double bind” (the well-documented phenomenon whereby women leaders face a trade-off between being liked and being seen as competent); a study of how cultural beliefs about work and family limit both men’s and women’s ability to thrive professionally and lead whole, fulfilled lives.

Edward R. Shapiro, MD (Discussant) is the former Medical Director/CEO of the Austen Riggs Center, a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, and a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute.

James Barron, PhD (Moderator) is a Faculty Member of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; Chair of the BPSI Task Force on Psychoanalysis and Organizations; Chair of the Section of the Psychoanalyst in the Community, Department of Psychoanalytic Education, American Psychoanalytic Association; in Private Practice, Brookline, MA.

From Freud to Bion and beyond, psychoanalysts have had a serious interest in understanding group dynamics. The Tavistock Institute and the “Tavi approach” have creatively combined psychoanalytic/psychodynamic and social systems perspectives to deepen our understanding of groups and organizations. Contemporary organizational theorists like Robin Ely, Diane Doerge Wilson Professor of Business Administration and Faculty Chair, Gender Initiative at the Harvard Business School, use similar “binocular vision” to build on that rich tradition. Professor Ely’s research suggests that the explanatory power of professional women’s conflict between work and family responsibilities (the “work-family narrative”) resulting in stalled advancement in the workplace is limited and misleading. She takes a systems psychodynamic perspective to show how organizations use this hegemonic narrative and attendant policies and practices as an unconscious “social defense” to help employees fend off anxieties raised by a 24/7 work culture.



Cancellation Policies & Procedures

Any program participant requesting their individual program registration be canceled, must submit their request in writing via email to Drew Brydon at dbrydon@bpsi.org. For fee-based events, a request for cancellation (and refund using the original form of payment) must be received no later than 48 hours in advance of the event. Requests received later than 48 hours prior to the event will not be processed or accepted.

All approved refunds are subject to a $10.00 administrative fee.

If BPSI cancels an event, all registrants will receive a full refund of fees paid (no administration charge) no later than two business days following the scheduled date of the event, using the original form of payment.
