Historical Note

Hampstead War Nursery was founded by Anna Freud in 1940 in England as a foster care home for over 80 children of single-parented families. Together with her close friend Dorothy Burlingham and other colleagues, Anna Freud worked with the nursery children, helping them to survive the stress of war. Later the nursery was joined by a group of orphans from the Theresianstadt concentration camp. When the war was over, Anna Freud and Kate Friedlaender turned the foster home into a school for child psychoanalysis known as Hamstead Child-Therapy Courses and later Clinic. Freud’s and Burlingham’s studies and observations of the Nursery’s children have been reflected in their published studies Young Children in War-Time, Infants without Families, and An Experiment in Group Upbringing. Anna Freud’s work at the the clinic has been summarized in the Research at the Hampstead Child-Therapy Clinic (1956-1965) and her book Normality and Pathology in Childhood (1965). The Hampstead Clinic grew out of the Hampstead War Nurseries, started by Anna Freud and Dorothy Burlingham. Founded in 1951, with Helen Ross, it was a center which set out to provide therapy and assistance to families to treat disturbed and handicapped children irrespective of their problems, social background or past history. At the same time they would offer aspiring analysts a balanced and rich chance at being trained. Freud and Burlingham worked at Hampstead until their retirement. Freud’s and Burlingham’s studies and observations of the Nursery’s children have been reflected in their published studies Young Children in War-Time, Infants without Families, and An Experiment in Group Upbringing. Anna Freud’s work at the the clinic has been summarized in the Research at the Hampstead Child-Therapy Clinic (1956-1965) and her book Normality and Pathology in Childhood In 1976, the Anna Freud Foundation funded a film by Joan Tewkesbury, "The Hampstead Child-Thereapy Course and Clinic" which shows a series of interviews and meetings with Freud, Burlingham, and the stadd and students at Hampstead. The film was recorded at the Hampstead Clinic in London in June 1976 to show what the clinic was about and their work there.
