Personality Diagnosis in
Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy:
A Roadmap for Treatment
Knowledge of personality styles, or “neurotic styles,” has accrued over generations of psychoanalytic observation and thought. An understanding of core personality dynamics brings focus to treatment, avoids stalemates, and deepens analytic work. Dr. Shedler will discuss personality styles most often seen in clinical practice (e.g., narcissistic, borderline, depressive, obsessive-compulsive, hysteric), drawing on and integrating accrued psychoanalytic wisdom with cutting edge scientific research. Dr. Shedler will discuss how each personality style has its own psychological vulnerabilities and is a distinct pathway to the “same” manifest symptoms of depression and anxiety, and he will offer clinical strategies for deepening treatment for each personality style. Attendees will also be introduced to the SWAP assessment instrument, a clinician-completed personality test for psychoanalytic diagnosis and case formulation.
Jonathan Shedler, PhD (Speaker) is known internationally as an author, researcher, and clinical educator. He is best known for his widely-read psychoanalytic paper, The Efficacy of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. It won worldwide acclaim for firmly establishing psychoanalytic therapy as an evidence-based treatment. His research and writing on personality are shaping contemporary views of personality syndromes and their treatment. He is co-creator of the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP), a clinician-completed psychological test for personality assessment and clinical case formulation, and he is co-author with Nancy McWilliams of the Personality Syndromes section of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM-2). He is an international speaker and provides clinical consultation to mental health professionals worldwide. Dr. Shedler is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco and a faculty member at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis.
Benjamin Herbstman, MD, MHS (Moderator) is a lecturer, part-time, at Harvard Medical School, an assistant psychiatrist at McLean Hospital, Psychoanalyst Member at Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI). He has a private practice in Cambridge, MA.
