We will look at psychoanalytic and family systems theories to understand each partner’s current interpersonal defensive patterns of conflict and blame, especially projective identification. An understanding of the family history, affect regulation, attachment, and unconscious emotional communication will help to inform our appreciation of the dysfunctional adaptive patterns enacted in the couple relationship. The therapist assumes a role of “multi-lateral partiality” with the couple as the transference and countertransference become identified.
