“OFF THE COUCH” PRESENTS: THEIR FINEST
Hosted by: Howard Katz, MD
In the summer of 1940, with the country’s morale flagging in the face of the Nazi Blitz, the British government tapped untried screenwriter Catrin Cole for a monumental task: to make a movie that would both buoy the weary nation’s spirits and inspire their American neighbors to join the fight. With a makeshift cast and crew including co-writer Buckley (Sam Clafin) and eccentric star Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy), Cole sets out to capture the “Dunkirk spirit” by dramatizing the true story of the Starling sisters, who helped rescue and evacuate wounded soldiers during the retreat. However, her vision soon encounters challenges both in the chaos of production and in the dismissive ambivalence of her male peers and superiors. Directed by Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig (An Education, The Riot Club) and based on the novel by Lissa Evans, Their Finest is a witty, romantic and moving portrayal of a young woman finding her way, and her voice, amidst the mayhem of war and cinema.
