The collection is made up of three series relating to the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA). Series I (American Psychoanalytic Association Records, 1933-1977) contains miscellaneous papers relating to the activities of APsaA during the first few decades of the Association's existence. Series II (American Psychoanalytic Association History and Archives Committee Records, 1971-2010, unknown) contains the papers of Dr. Sanford Gifford (Director of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and a co-chair of the Committee) relating to the activity of the History and Archives Committee. Specifically, Series II focuses on meetings of the Committee, correspondence with Committee members, background concerning the Committee's Oral History Workshops, some of Dr. Sanford Gifford's Oral History Projects, and assorted other interviews. For information on audio and transcripts from APsaA's Oral History Workshops, see Oral History Workshops, 1975-2010 and Oral History Transcripts. Scope and Content Note

The American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA), the oldest and largest national organization for professional psychoanalysts in the United States, was founded in 1911. APsaA is a publisher of a peer-reviewed quarterly scholarly Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA), the creator of the professional standards and ethics for psychoanalysts, and a constituent of the International Psychoanalytical Association. The Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute is an affiliate of the American Psychoanalytic Association. The small collection of APsaA records held at BPSI Archives reflects the old versions of APsaA constitutions and by-laws, earlier minutes and meeting-related correspondence. The records of APsaA's History and Archives Committee contains documentation relating to the activities of the Committee and its members, including budgetary breakdowns, committee reports and preparations for meetings, meeting attendance, and correspondence (letters, e-mails, and short notes). Records of the History and Archives Committee also include correspondence, preparation notes, and drafts of speeches given at the Committee's annual Oral History Workshops. The records of APsaA's Association of Administrators contains documents relating to the three iterations of the group up to the present: the Executive Secretaries of the Institutes and Training Centers, the Group of Executive Secretaries (GOES), and the Association of Administrators. These records include financial reports, preparations for and summaries of meetings, correspondence, and brief histories of the group over the years.
