Holly Friedman Housman, LICSW, Chair is currently a faculty member at BPSI where she is also Chair of the Board of Trustees. She is on a number of committees at BPSI: Student’s Committee, Coordinating Committee, Faculty Education Committee, and the Leadership Team. She is the recent past Co-Chair of the Explorations in Mind Program. She has a private practice in Cambridge between Harvard and Central Squares.
Janet Witte, MD, MPH, Chair-elect is a psychoanalyst on the faculty at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Janet graduated from Emory University School of Medicine and Rollins School of Public Health in 2002. She completed psychiatry residency at MGH/McLean and continues to work part-time at MGH in the Clinical Trials Network and Institute and doing psychotherapy supervision. At BPSI, Janet teaches in the Fellowship, served several terms as Board Secretary, and is co-Chair of Admissions for the Psychotherapy Programs. Janet is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School. She has a private practice in Coolidge Corner, Brookline.
Catherine Kimble, MD, Executive Director is a Supervising and Training Analyst at BPSI. She is on the faculty of the Adult Analytic Program and the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program. Catherine is a Supervisor at the MGH-McLean Psychiatry Residency Training Program and Co-Director of the MGH-McLean Program in Psychodynamics (PiP). She has a private practice in Lexington.
Cary Friedman, MD, President is a BPSI Training and Supervising Analyst and psychiatrist in private practice in Cambridge. He has held several administrative posts at BPSI, including Secretary, Chair of the Psychoanalytic Training Program’s Joint Curriculum/Faculty Executive Committee, and Chair of the Education Policy Committee. He is also a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association Committee on Gender and Sexuality and has written and taught extensively on gender, sexuality, reproductive technology, nontraditional families, and psychoanalysis.
Paola Contreras, PsyD, President-elect is a psychoanalyst and psychologist who focuses on the connections of psychoanalysis with the social and community. Her career began with work in communities affected by the Guatemalan Civil War, including training as a psychologist and participation in a Lacanian study group in Guatemala. She continued her training in the U.S., where she is now an Associate Professor at William James College and directs the Human Trafficking Community Research Hub. At BPSI, she co-directs the Community Psychoanalysis Concentration, co-chairs the Community Division, and co-instructs a class on Jean Laplanche’s work. She also has a private practice in Cambridge.
Cecil Webster, MD, Secretary is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with appointments at Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital. He is founder of the Webster Clinic, a group practice grounded in psychoanalytic principles and dedicated to the care of ethnically, sexually, and gender diverse individuals and families. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and the Editorial Board of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child.
Christopher Leich, JD, Treasurer is an Academic Member in Psychoanalysis at BPSI. A retired partner of Ropes & Gray LLP, he brings to BPSI extensive experience with financial and tax matters. He serves as an independent director of two private asset management firms, and he has also served on the board of several non-profits, including the Gibson House Museum, the Political Asylum/Immigration Representation Project, and the Arlington Land Trust. Chris holds a JD from Harvard Law School, a Bachelor of Philosophy from Oxford University, and a BA from Swarthmore College.
COMMUNITY TRUSTEES
Carol E. Bonner, MSW, MBA, EdD is Associate Dean of the School of Social Work at Bridgewater State University. Educated as a clinical social worker, grounded in decades in social work education, her career reflects a sustained commitment to higher education leadership, social justice, and fostering environments where individuals feel welcomed and respected. She is a community member of the BPSI Board who serves on the scholarship committee. She has a BA from Mount Holyoke College, an MSW from Simmons College School of Social Work, an MBA from Boston University, and an EdD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Education.
Robin Ely, PhD is the Diane Doerge Wilson Professor of Business Administration Emerita and Baker Foundation Professor at Harvard Business School where she teaches leadership courses and conducts research on race and gender relations in organizations, often from a systems psychodynamic perspective. Prior to joining the HBS faculty, Robin taught at Columbia University and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She received her Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Yale University.
Mr. Nelson Liu is a Senior Associate at Schwartz Silver Architects (SSA), and was the primary associate for the renovation of BPSI’s home in Newton. As an expert in the real-world issues of construction and mechanical coordination, he served as Project Manager for the documentation and construction of some of the firm’s most sensitive and demanding projects, including the Newton Central Fire Station, Yale University’s 87 Trumbull Street, and the restoration and reuse of McKim Mead and White’s Cocke Hall on Thomas Jefferson’s Lawn at the University of Virginia. Aside from project management, Nelson’s passion is his mentorship of younger staff members, drawing from his thirty years of experience at SSA.
Robert Stern, MD is currently the Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatric Services at BMC Brighton. He was trained at The Cambridge Hospital as a Community Psychiatrist, supporting his dedication to serve those most in need and least able to pay. Bob has proudly served as a Community Trustee to lend my support to the organization that honors and elevates subjectivity, and whenever possible point trainees to BPSI for enhanced training.

Susan Austrian, MD
James Barron, PhD, ABPP is a faculty member and past Chair of the BPSI Board of Trustees. Jim is Head of the Department of Psychoanalytic Education (DPE) of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA), Co-Chair of the DPE Council for Leadership and Organizational Studies (CLOS), and past chair of the DPE Psychoanalyst in the Community. He maintains a private practice in Brookline with a focus on psychoanalysis and organizational consulting.
Amy Fleischer, LICSW is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in Norwich, Vermont. She teaches on the psychotherapy faculty of BPSI and chairs the BPSI Psychotherapy Conference. Amy has also been an Associate Professor at Smith College School For Social Work, and is currently a Clinical Instructor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. Amy is the Chair of the Committee on Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Programs for the American Psychoanalytic Association, and serves on the BPSI Board of Trustees.
Donna Fromberg, PsyD is immediate past president of BPSI and is a Supervising and Training Analyst. She is on the faculty of the Adult Analytic Program and the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program where she is a committed teacher. She has served on several BPSI committees including Students Committee, Joint Curriculum Committee and Program Committee. She has a private practice in Brookline.

Komal Gupta, PsyD is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Newton. She is an incoming first-year Candidate at BPSI, and she serves on the Board of Trustees. She is also a member of the JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) committee. Her clinical and scholarly interests focus on racial and cultural identity development, intergenerational trauma and resilience, and cultural issues specific to Indian communities.
Benjamin Herbstman, MD is a psychoanalyst on the faculty at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. He has an advising practice where he consults to family businesses, CEOs, entrepreneurs, and boards. He is a lecturer, part-time, at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Psychiatrist at The Pavilion at McLean Hospital. Ben is a supervisor in the MGH/McLean Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program. He has a private practice in Cambridge.
Theodore Murray, MD is a child and adolescent psychiatrist in Cambridge. He is a post-academic candidate in psychoanalysis at BPSI and serves on the Admissions and Nominating Committees and recently co-led a Task Force on Tele-analysis for the Education Committee. He teaches both in the Fellowship/ATP at BPSI as well as Cambridge Health Alliance/ Harvard Medical School where he also supervises and mentors trainees.

Alison Newman, LICSW is a third-year Candidate Member at BPSI. She has served on a number of committees and councils at BPSI and is currently a member of the Social Work Travel Grant Award Committee. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University and her Master of Social Work in Clinical Mental Health from Boston College. Her clinical experience includes work at McLean Hospital, college counseling services at Wellesley College, alcohol and drug counseling services at Boston College, and as adjunct faculty at Boston College. She has a private practice in Lexington.

Holly Blatman, MD is a psychoanalyst and a child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist. She teaches and is a member of the psychoanalytic and psychotherapy faculties at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, where she is Chair of the New Members Committee and serves on the Board of Trustees. She has a private practice in Cambridge.
Jack Foehl, PhD is a past president of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, where he is supervising/training analyst. He is a lecturer at Harvard Medical School and clinical associate professor at NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. He is emeritus joint editor in chief of Psychoanalytic Dialogues and is past board member of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. He lives and works in private practice in Cambridge.
Kimberlyn Leary, PhD has served as the Executive Vice President at the Urban Institute, an Advisor and Senior Fellow at New America, and has joined the faculty of the Harvard Kennedy School as an Emma Bloomberg Lecturer in Policy and Management. She has also been a consulting advisor to the Gates Foundation. Kim also holds academic appointments as an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and has held two roles in federal service: in the Obama White House as an advisor to the Council on Women and Girls, as a senior advisor to the Biden White House Domestic Policy Council, and as a fellow in the Office of Management and Budget.
Jan Seriff, PsyD is a Training and Supervising Analyst at BPSI, a faculty member of the psychoanalytic and psychotherapy training programs, a member of the Board of Trustees, (former Co-chair of Development and former Chair of the Campaign for Psychoanalysis), and current Chair of the Education Committee for BPSI’s Psychoanalytic Training Program. Jan is also chair of the American Board of Psychoanalysis’ Certification Committee. In all of her local and national professional activities, Jan’s passion is psychoanalytic education and the training of the next generation of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytically-informed psychotherapists. She maintains a private practice in psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and clinical supervision in Newton.
Robert Silver, FAIA is a Founding Principal of Schwartz/Silver Architects, and was the Principal-in-Charge of the renovation of BPSI’s home in Newton. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and has served as a Trustee of the New England Baptist Hospital; as a member of the Board of Directors of the Boston Society of Architects; and as Chair of the Newton Upper Falls Historic District Commission. He received his BA in Physics from the City University of New York; his MA in Architecture from Cambridge University; and his MArch from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.
Usha Tummala-Narra, PhD is a Professor of Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology at Boston College. Her research and scholarship focus on immigration, trauma, and culturally informed psychoanalytic psychotherapy. She is also a clinical psychologist in Independent Practice. Usha is a Consulting Editor for Psychoanalytic Dialogues and for the American Psychologist, and a member of the Holmes Commission on Racial Equality in American Psychoanalysis.
Susan Walton, PhD is an American social historian who has worked in academia and public history. She has taught the American History survey course and courses in Women’s History and Boston History, and she co-wrote reports on the Pierce House in Dorchester and a Woodstock, VT National Park, foundation documents for their public tours. Now retired, she spends wonderful time with her grandchildren and continues her long-time church volunteer work, involved in governance, development, and the “Feed the Hungry” ministry.
