WELCOME TO BPSI’S JOINT ADULT & CHILD PSYCHOANALYSIS PROGRAM

BPSI’s Joint Program offers simultaneous study of both Adult and Child psychoanalysis. It provides Candidates with a multi-faceted exploration of the theories and principles of psychoanalytic thought. Observations regarding unconscious mental functioning, symbolic representations in thought, action and play, the analytic relationship, and the role of the past in the present, provide a foundation for the consideration of more than a century of developments in adult and child psychoanalytic theory and technique. Through a combination of personal analysis, close supervision, and a broad exposure to the history of psychoanalytic ideas, observations, and theories, our extensive clinical training fully prepares Candidates for the close clinical interactions inherent in psychoanalysis with patients of all ages. BPSI is dedicated to ultimately guiding Candidates toward becoming accomplished, compassionate, broadly trained psychoanalysts.

Our training program consists of three major parts, which take place concurrently:

  • A five-year curriculum of theoretical and clinical seminars taken together with a cohort of candidates from BPSI’s Adult Analytic Program and BPSI’s Child Analytic Program.
  • Five or more supervised psychoanalyses conducted by the Candidate to enhance the understanding of others and provide intensive clinical experience with adults, children and adolescents.
  • A Candidate’s personal analysis to enhance self-understanding and to gain a deep appreciation of the dynamic interaction between analyst and patient.

Psychoanalytic Candidates draw from their full capacity of learning, creativity, caring and compassion. By interweaving scholarly training, made relevant through “practical” experience, with intensive one-on-one supervision, BPSI fully prepares graduates for the clinical practice of psychoanalysis and the application of psychoanalytic concepts to many areas of clinical, scholarly, and other professional work.

Traditionally, classes in adult psychoanalysis are held Thursday evenings at BPSI, 5:30 pm-7:00 pm and 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm, with an hour free for dinner, over eight-week periods from September to early June.

Classes in child psychoanalysis are held on Monday and Thursday evenings.
