BPSI Archives: Audiovisual Materials

Oral History Interview Records, 1953-2019, bulk 1973-2019
Thanks to an over 50-year effort by Dr. Sanford Gifford, the BPSI Archives has a large collection interviews with many noted psychoanalysts and their family members, such as Grete Bibring, Helene Deutsch, Suzanne and Martin Deutsch, Marie Briehl, Mrs. Martin Peck, Maria Piers, Renee Spitz, and many others. First recorded on reel-to-reel tapes and audio cassettes, many of these interviews have now been converted to digital files and could be published on CD’s by request. The most recent addition to our Oral Histories are video interviews with the Kravitz Award recipients, senior analysts, and noted book authors. These recorded conversations are posted online.

BPSI Event Records, 1946, bulk 1971-2019 
This collection consists of audio recordings of selected conferences, symposia, scientific meetings, Meet the Author sessions, anniversary celebrations, and other events held by the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. While the majority of historic events was originally recorded and preserved on analog audio cassettes, the BPSI Archives can convert archival records into digital audio files and produce audio CD’s per request. Oral History Workshops of the American Psychoanalytic Association, 1975-2010
This collection consists of sound recordings and transcripts of the Oral History Workshops conducted by the American Psychoanalytic Association at their bi-annual meetings. Materials are collected and annotated by Dr. Sanford Gifford. Finding aid for this collection is available here.

BCPSG Infant Research Audio Recordings, 1985-2005

The Boston Change Process Study Group (BCPSG), which was formed in 1995, collectively produced several seminal papers culminating in the book Change in Psychotheraphy: A Unifying Paradigm (W.W. Norton, 2010). The collection contains 288 audio cassette, donated to BPSI Archives in 2016. They are recordings of the group’s discussions on research and publications. Audio recordings also include presentations and seminars hosted or presented by members of the BCPSG. The collection contains three series: BCPSG Discussion “Playpen”, Infant Research Workshop, and Conferences and Seminars. Finding aid for this collection is available here.

Other Audiovisual Materials
Other materials in the audiovisual archive feature miscellaneous topics of psychoanalysis, documentaries, Classics Revisited series, as well as historic events and interviews with analysts recorded and produced by other organizations. To retrieve a certain media type, select Call Number from the Browse pull-down menu, and enter “reel to reel” or “audio cassette” or “video tape” or “DVD” or “CD” in the search line. Combine this search with any other query using AND operator to narrow your results to certain words in the title, subject, author name, or anywhere in the record.
