The Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI) is a leading educational institution and membership society that offers full training in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. At its core, BPSI provides a home for education, development, and collegial intellectual exchange throughout the professional lives of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists. In order to ensure the vitality of these core activities, BPSI strives to foster a dynamic and diverse learning community that supports and recognizes a wide spectrum of psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic careers.

Founded in 1933, the Boston Psychoanalytic Society & Institute (BPSI) is the largest APsaA and IPA-affiliated institute in the country, a vibrant educational and professional community of psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic therapists, interdisciplinary scholars, and others who are curious about the field of psychoanalysis. From the beginning, BPSI has been devoted to:

  • excellence in training and education,
  • a commitment to open, honest exchange of ideas,
  • meeting the continuing education and professional needs of our Members,
  • outreach to engage analysts from around the world, and
  • support and outreach for the greater community.

BPSI welcomes anyone interested in the study and practice of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and the ongoing applications of psychoanalysis in the community, medicine, and the arts. By consistently providing high-level post-graduate education, multidisciplinary programs and intensive clinical experience – in an engaging professional environment – BPSI fosters the development of highly specialized, trained and compassionate practitioners and teachers and a better understanding of analysis in the community. OUR LIBRARY
As part of our generous resources for BPSI Members, we offer an extensive digital and print library, one of the finest psychoanalytic libraries anywhere. Our library holds a valuable collection of over 7000 books and subscribes to over 90 bound Journals and current periodicals. Visit our library

OUR EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAMS

BPSI education and training programs, grounded in 80 years of ongoing exploration and development, focus on psychoanalysis for today and its place in the future. Our faculty is committed to exploring diverse theories, in a constant process of discovery.

BPSI offers many different programs to meet your needs, including Adult Psychoanalytic Training, Child Psychoanalytic Training, Advanced Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training and our One-Year Fellowship in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Many students complete more than one of these programs.


PARTNERING AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

BPSI is committed to exploring practical and new applications of psychoanalysis and developing partnerships in education and programming that enrich our community and extend our engagement with other groups around us.

Our Explorations in Mind courses are open to anyone interested in psychoanalysis.

BPSI’s diverse commitments within the community include outreach to training programs in schools of social work, psychology, and psychiatry, to academia, supporting psychoanalytic research, and supporting and honoring psychoanalytic work in the broader community.
